    Course overview:
    The course will be an introduction to the field of digital forensics as it relates to business. Lecture topics to include introduction to digital forensics and e-discovery, current laws related to business data and networks, including compliance and reporting requirements, basics of file system, digital device and network forensics, cyber-security issues, business policies and procedures. This course is designed for information system students, business students and business managers.


    Course Goals:
    Students will gain an understanding of the field of digital forensics, e-discovery and cyber law. After the semester, students will have the base knowledge for additional digital forensic and cyber-security courses. They will be able to apply this knowledge in business information systems management, policies, and decision making.


    Instructor:
    Karen Lynne Shafer, a FBI Senior Digital Evidence Forensic Examiner, is a Program Coordinator for the digital evidence education unit. She writes and teaches courses to FBI digital evidence forensic examiners. She holds multiple digital evidence forensic certifications in Windows, Macintosh, and Mobile Devices, as well as EnCE, GIAC and IACIS CFCE certifications. She has been qualified as an expert witness in Digital Forensics. FE Shafer holds multiple Microsoft and IT Industry professional certifications.

    What is Digital Forensics?

    Digital forensics is the application of the science of how data is stored and is transmitted to an investigative question. Both digital forensics and e-discovery play a large role in any business. Every business needs to securely store sensitive or private information and understanding these requirements will help you compete in the business or legal world.

    Why this course?

    Digital forensics is FUN! Solving puzzles and digging into artifacts from a computer or phone provides an interesting view of our online and ever connected world. Knowing what and how your data is stored can make it easier for you to navigate in this digital universe.

    Do I need special computer knowledge?

    No! This course has no pre-requisites and is designed for anyone studying business, forensic or IT related topics to gain an understanding of the field of digital forensics and how it applies to your future company or organization. Past students have included accounting, data analytics, MBA and cybersecurity majors. No prior experience is required.

    Do I need a special computer or software?

    All course labs will be completed using the Virginia Cyber Range. You need a standard VCU approved computer with internet access! You will need an office suite with word processing and spreadsheet capabilities. 90% of the labs will be worked during class time with the instructor.
